Can roofing shingles be placed over a corrigated metal roof?

Purchased a home with a metal roof over an open patio. The HOA is now requiring a shingled roof and since I am on a fixed income I am looking for a way to handled this situation with minimal expense.

That is not a totally uncommon thing.

If this is a new purchase, I would look at the purchase documents, including all paperwork from the HOA regarding this, and maybe talk to your realtor or attorney - because the sale may have included an approvall of the as-is condition from the HOA, or they may be blocked from taking action on it after a certain time unchallenged. ALso look CLOSELY at the HOA charter - that sort of restriction may or may not be within their powers. Also get any paperwork on the original construction from their files - if it was origianlly approved with metal roof they probably cannot now require shingles.

Cheapest - probably have it torn down and hauled away. If a kit unit, might even be able to sell it to someone (though liability in letting someone do this on your property) to dismantle and haul away - or pay Handyman to dismantle and stack in garage or place not visible to HOA, then sell on Craigslist unless that is illegal in your HOA too (you can tell I LOVE HOA's) - with luck you might (if taken down with care) get maybe half the deconstruction cost back in the sale. If complete, likely to move fast. (If posts are embedded in concrete, as opposed to bolted down, so have to be dug up or cut off that is a complication regarding deconstruction cost or resale.)

To keep it, I would check any design with them (including exact shingle color with a sample) first so you don't end up with them later objecting to the fix too, but cheapest roofing option would probably be to overlay with bolted-down treated plywood sheathing (probably 15/32 or 12mm thickness) with wood firring strips underneath to provide full support at the framing, water barrier, then normal shingles. Almost the same thing that would normally be done with metal roof over shingles, but I would NOT try putting down shingles without sheathing. That can be done with firring strips with metal shingles at times, but using the plywood sheathing is a lot cheaper than metal shingle alternative.

To get proper shingle nail holding power, would probably have to fir up off the aluminum so the shingle nails do not penetrate it and show underneath. Other alternative, which might be nearly as cheap, is removing the aluminum and reroofing conventionally with sheathing, water barrier, shingles. Actually, firring over the aluminum might be better - easier to keep the nails from showing through underneath, as they normally do in an attic.

A good roofing company or few should be able to give you pricing on any or all of these options - my guess is reroofing likely to be about $5-8/SF unless much larger than a normal patio cover (minimum charge likely around $500), total removal maybe $250-500 total.

One other alternative, in CA and AZ and FL at least, is there are a very few specialty painting companies (or roofing companies doing this as a side-line) which use templates to lay on the roof and spray-paint on an asphaltic coating with granules in strips, which when done looks like a thin shingle coating - for exactly your reason, or for aesthetics on metal resort roofs and such. I saw this at a resort once - to a layman probably would not have caught their eye, though I did triple-take seeing it and checked it out because the "shingles" were thinner than normal. That cost would likely fall between demolition and reroofing with shingles - though you would have look at their work somewhere, and show pictures to the HOA for approval first. There is a significantly higher risk with that of the HOA rejecting it after seeing it.

Also, would have to be sure they mask VERY well so they do not spray your patio, house, and car as well. (Might start a new trend there- putting the spray-on undercoating on the outside of the car.)
