Can sewage under crawl space make my family sick?

My whole house smells of sewage. I had a plumber out, and he said that the toilet flange was non-existant, and the result was a pool of sewage under the crawl space. He fixed the flange issue, and removed about two 45lb. buckets of sludge from the crawl, and put a bag of lime under there to help kill of any lingering bacteria. Could the sewage have been making us ill? My husband, myself, and our 13 month old have been suffering from what seemed like the longest cold in history; all winter. My Doctor and my Pediatrician seems to think so; and they have both written letters for me to show to my insurance agent. I contacted my Homeowner's Insurance Agent, and he said it wasn't covered. How about cleaning for health issues? Anyone have experience with any of this, and if so, what did you do?
