Question DetailsAsked on 12/13/2015

Can shag area rugs be professionally cleaned?

The rug is 7'x9' - 100% Polypropylene - says it can not be dry cleaned. We have 3 small dogs who poop on it occasionally. It's hard to vacuum because it is a shag pile. Would love to know what area rug cleaner would be best for this type of rug. Thank you!

Sure - assuming not the type with water soluble backing adhesive, some Carpet Cleaners will come and spread it out on your drive and shampoo and clean it, some will take it to their place of business to do it. Some cleaners (dry cleaners/laundries) can also handle pretty large throw and area rugs in their cleaning equipment, though yours might be at about the limit for that.

One thing you do NOT want to let them do is clean it in-place - will definitely stain the underlying surface, and if not a waterproof floor will water damage it. I have seen too many instances where carpet cleaners said "oh, it will be fine" and the owner ended up with a flooring replacement job.
