Below are links to some prior similar questions about those brands which might help you - you can find other questions about those brands and others in the Home > Roofing link in Browse Projects at lower left, though it might be easier to just put the words Timberline and Tamko (one at a time) into the Ask box and see which prior question links it suggests for you - there are about 6-10 overall discussing those brands in the last couple of years, as I recall.

My personal opinion - between the two I would go with the GAF, because I have seen and heard of what seems like an unusual number of failed Tamko's in high winds.

They are basically the same. GAF spends more on their name brand recognition, but Shingles are very similar, from manufacturer to manufacturer. A big difference is the color. Tamko does look good after it's installed. Also, my contractors paid less for my Tamko shingles than he would have for GAF. It was about 15% less expensive. Warranties all seemed pretty good but with shingle warranties, the manufacturer covers all replacement costs including labor and material without proration for the first ten years. Tamko is the only company that covers labor and material without proration for 15 years. After this initial non-prorated, the value of these shingle warranties is very low. Those that claim "lifetime" are misleading. Shingles are made with asphalt and always have been. The manufacturers used to warrant them for 20 years. Then it was 25 year. Then 30, then 40, then 50, now it's lifetime??? At the end of the day, the shingles are made of the same materials. What really matters is the up-front part of the warranty and how your contractor feels about dealing with GAF or Tamko when the chips are down. My guy loves Tamko because when he had a problem with their product, they handled it quickly and covered his cost. He's just confident in his relationship. I like the colors and the way it looks on my roof compared to the others in my neighborhood. And the quote I got from my roofer, with Tamko, was almost $2000 cheaper than the one with GAF. My roofer's message about that was, "they're all good companies with good products, but Tamko's are less expensive and every bit as good. Why? Maybe because they're not in Home Depot or Lowes."
