Question DetailsAsked on 6/4/2014

Contractor sold me and installed a 4 function bathroom fan, but put in a 3 function switch. Should he replace it?

He charged 600 dollars for a panasonic heater/ fan/ light/ night light and installed it and the switch. The 3 way switch he put in cost 20 dollars and the 4 way switch it should have cost 70. I have already paid him. It appears he seems to be skimping on me to add to his profit. Is this common? What can i do about this?

Some contractors will put the light and the fan on the same switch especially if it is one of the low sone fans. The thinking is that since they are so quiet they might be left on accidentally. I think myself that this should be explained to the homeowner before the job is done. To have all functions on a separate switch means running an extra wire and I wonder ifthat is the real reason but it only costs a few dollars when the walls are open or you are pulling them through the wall so they may be doing it for the reason stated.

Not long ago I was working as a subcontractor and while finishing up some tile work I called the plumber I was working for and told him the electrician had forgotten to put a wire to the fan and that was what I was told. The fan was that quiet that I did not know it was on.

Don is right on the mark about light commonly being merged into fan function.

Question is what did you agree to install - full 4 functions, or less. He may have installed 4 function but if you ordered 3 way, then 3 way switch would meet the contract. If you selected the 4 function fan as what you wanted and he only installed 3 functionthen he shold come back at no charge and make it fully functional.

Of course, paying before fully inspecting and testing the work product was your first mistake - because you lost your hold over him.
