Depends mostly on the heating capacity needed. A single-faucet electric unit can be bought and installed by a plumber for around $1000, a whole house unit can run several thousand $.

One thing to note is that MANY people are not happy with tankless units - unless you vastly oversize it, they generally are not be able to turn out enough hot water to keep up with clothes washer, dishwasher, or shower/tub. That is why water heaters were invented - they heat the water more slowly and then store a large quantity (30-60 gallons typically for a residence) available for use when needed.

To have a tankless on-demand heating unit with enough capacity to provide a continuous flow of 130-140 degree water will require special wiring all the way from your electrical panel, and they tend to have shorter lives than water heaters.

Read up on user's comments on various brands and talk to your plumber before you make a decision, so you are not disappointed later on after plunking down a wad of $.
