Depends on the extent & complexity of your remode. Sometimes contractors can help out on selecting the materials. I'd say if you are particular about materials, want the latest and have a specific taste, yes hire an architect. They listen to your requirements and do the research for you. If you have a selective taste and don't hire them you'd be relying on your contractor and yor own time to do the work of an archect. Also if you need to submit plans to building dept, you need an architect to draw up the drawing per current codes.
