Question DetailsAsked on 9/22/2011

Do you really check out to see if companies don't use family members to rate their family or friends?

I am a member, Capitola Altizer, and I have rated and used a business on Angies list. After my use and then rated them, I am now being sued for
almost $10,000.00 for that rating saying I hurt their business. Now, I am trying to find out how to stop this man and his business from taking me to the cleaners to gain money for himself by him using Angies List to trick
people. So, by asking this question, I just need to know if you check business out when they put their name on this sight or the people who put in a rating to see if they are friends or family.

Thanks for your question. The short answer is yes, we really checkout the validity of the reports on Angie’s List. Our criteria for a fair reportisn’t limited to what we’d call self-reporting (getting reports from family andfriends.) We never have and never will accept anonymous reports, and we requiremembers to affirm that they are giving us an honest assessment of their actualexperience each time they submit a report. We do not allow them to report morethan once on the same service experience (unless it’s to update informationthat has changed – for example if they reported a problem that was latercorrected by the company.) Also, we don’t allow service companies (ortheir friends and family) to report on themselves.

We have a complex system of accountability that allows us to usetechnology and human review to ensure members and companies are in compliancewith our guidelines. We have a specialized team to investigate complaints ofviolation, and we employ an outside company to audit our process annually to besure we are providing consumers with reliable information.

Please let us know if wecan be more specific or helpful to you as you deal with this matter. In our 16years of experience, no member has ever been found liable for honestlyreporting his or her opinion. Several states have adopted SLAPP acts to helpconsumers fight off unfair litigation that results from opinion sharing. Wehave long had a policy that we will alert consumers to unfriendly consumerpractices, including filing lawsuits against members for reporting. Please share more of your situation with us so we can determine if weshould take this action.

Thanks for the great return... I gave my copy of what Jerrod Lollis of Mid South Builders at 1101 Putnam ST in Benton IL. So, I am unable to tell you what he said but it was about me, a customer, putting on Angies List a bad report. When I get to court, Oct 6, 2011 at 11AM in Benton Court House, I will as for a copy and hope they will give me one. They are asking for $9,000.00 damage from me which isn't true as when they were at my home picking up a check for work done, they said they would put a lein on my home if I don't pay what they asked for. I have never had this happen so I don't know what to say but thought you could send me a statement of some kind to show that Angies List is for consumers to find honest business with good prices in an age where so much evil seems to reign. I was hoping I could get something by mail or e mail so I can print off for the judge unless you have someone in my area to come and stand with me. I can't afford a lawyer, so going at this on my own. Not sure if they have a lawyer.
