Hardi plank or cedarmax insulated vinyl siding? Which is better? Changing whole house siding on east coast.

I lived in the west coast where hardie plank is common. Everyone in east coast uses shake or vinyl. I am getting many who are telling me hardi plank need too much maintenance?

You would get arguments both ways from different people. Personally, I have seen a lot of issues with concrete plank siding - many of them related to improper installation or cracking due to lack of pilot holes through the concrete in standard installation but also paint issues, particularly when dealing with materials that were not factory primed so they peel when regular house paint is used on them.

Vinyl of course has its durability and lack of toughness issues, and the whole argument of insulated siding that is not at all airtight is somewhat of a scam - they argue it is insulated, but then point out it lets air through to avoid the very common problem of condensation on the inside surface - you can't have it both ways unless you use double curtain wall where the siding is set off from the wall itself by a ventilated airspace.

If I had to choose one over the other with no other choices like wood siding or shakes, I guess I would go with rigid insulation board with housewrap, and spaced-off cement board or plank - properly primed with concrete paint, then finish color coat as desired.
