Question DetailsAsked on 5/27/2014

Has anyone ever worked with Fidelity Locksmith in the San Diego area? I just had a horrible experience with them!

My Mother was locked out of her house last Sunday. The Tech quoted her a trip charge of 29.99 -- reasonable.

He replaced the front door lockset (a Baldwin, which I know is very expensive) and the cylinder in the pedestrian garage door. $969.00!!!

Hello, this is Meranda with Angie's List.

I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience with this locksmith! You should definitely submit a review on www.angieslist.com about your experience so other consumers know about it and to steer clear of this business. You also may find help in this article from our Newsroom about what to do when a contractor screws you over.

In this case, it sounds like your mother is the victim of a widespread locksmith scam, where they quote a reasonable or cheap fee over the phone and jack up the price when they arrive because they know you're desperate. You can read more about the problem in this piece about lawless locksmiths.

As an added benefit of membership, when you submit a review with a grade below C, you may be able to go through our Complaint Resolution Process. In that case, one of our staff members will contact the company on your behalf to try to reach a solution/resolution for you.

If you need more help, you can always reach out to our member services team: 1-888-944-5478 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Eastern time.

Good luck!

I just got locked out tonight. Was tired from work (approx 8pm this evening). My kind neighbor called this company in my behalf. Several things wrong with this company which are the following:

1. told us on phone that it would be 20-30min (I set my phone alarm for 30 min) - They called us back within 10 min and told us that it would be 35 min? My neighbor said that we just spoke and it would be 20-30 min so how could it be now another 35 min. Next thing we knew the guy comes around the corner and yells did someone call a lock smith?

2. We asked for a quote and were told a price of "it will be 35 dollars. Nope! locksmith at my door (which it was only my screen door locked (interior door main door wide open...) states to me "can you go inside and get me money" and drivers license" I was asked him do you know why you are here? I AM LOCKED OUT!!! How can I get anything?

3. He hands me a pad as he starts telling me that he will TRY AND PICK MY SCREEN DOOR BUT I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO SO THEREFORE I WILL HAVE TO DRILL AND THEN REPLACE DOOR KNOBS AND GIVE YOU BRAND NEW LOCKS???!!!

3. I asked what he handed me..He said to " sign this...I said I have to read first. The pad he handed me was an itemized BILL..I THAT TOTALED $150.00 and told me it might be more may be more. When I saw this I told him to step away from the door and not touch anything. I preceded to tell him what I was told the cost was going to be from his boss prior to him showing up. I told him that A. You have not done anything yet. B. what are these other charges...etc. I told him to leave and what you're doing is a bait and switch.

4. He looked suprised and said that he would clarify with his boss...his boss called me and started to try to NEGOTIATE A PRICE THAT WAS LOWER .."HOW ABOUT $129.00. I Told him that I do not conduct business like this and that I've already called another company that i know is reputable. I told him that him and his worker don't need to bother and that I am not using your service.

5. Called busy bee service who is terrific! They said that they have gotten bad reports about this company as well and literally they have had to fix some of the problems that this Fidelty company has done that is shady. Also, they have had many complaints that they tell you a low price...show up...and your bill is $400.00 or more! DO NOT USE FIDELITY...THEY DO BAIT AND SWITCH..

Do not use this company! They try to abuse their knowledge and will rip you off. I locked myself out of the apt (one lock, bottom handle) and they said 29.00 and the locksmith will determine how much to charge. The guy came out and proceeded to pick lock then "claimed" he has to use "another tool" to get it open Or he might have to drill the lock open. He used another tool to pull the handle down and opened the door. he never mentioned that their was an extra charge to use another tool. In total they charged 229.00 . 29 to go there 90 for an "emergency" - I'm sorry what emergency it was only 8:30 am and I had the day off from work another 90 for the special tool. And 20 for "taxes". Ripoff. They are dishonest.
