Today's psychiatrists do not do therapy, they dispense drugs (from the mouth of a psychiatrist). Their practice has changed. Whether using a Specialist or not, please be aware that there is a lab test (urine) that gives neurotransmitter levels (brain chemicals) for a dozen neurotransmitters. Relatively new but proven. After terrible outcomes for two loved ones after medication by well referenced Neurologist and 2 Psychiatrists (age change required change in physician), things were going ever worse until we turned again to our MD for help and any test that could be run to help find a better direction. Urine test by Pharmasan Labs saved them both. One was being given meds (Adderall & Strattera) to up Dopamine when Dopamine came back over 2X normal level; it was drug-induced psychosis via prescription by these big medical city specialists we waited better part of a year to get in to see. Other was given meds that didn't help and actually heightened anxiety (Concerta) when lab test showed serotonin was horribly low (except individual never gloomy, etc.) and had made working memory and processsing of info terribly slow and weak and made learning nearly impossible.

Literally days after giving non-prescription supplement (ones we purchased locally with similar ingredients as those offered on "recommendations" sheet) and math was done at school instead of 5-6 hrs of struggle each night. Now on Dean's list.

The Adderall "pusher" immediately & abruptly pulled patient off it when seeing lab report. Following test and recommendations has made all the difference and successfully on own and promotion at good job.

Drugs are powerful things and have their own downsides (weight gain and other mental risks) but the right one may be exactly what is needed.

Getting a baseline of brain chemistry FIRST whether going through Psychiatrist or MD best way to get best results without mistakes.
