How does Angie's List protect against reviewers that are paid by the providers?

I don't any system is bulletproof in terms of being able to eliminate anyone that wants to gain the system.

Hopefully that is the exception and not the rule and people will want to preserve the integrity of the reviewer based system.

There will always be someone that is trying to hustle the system.

I guess you hope that the cream rises to the top but don't rely solely on Angie's List for all your answers. You still need to check the contractor out.
