Question DetailsAsked on 9/21/2012

How do I check to see if a contractor's/handyman's license is up to date.

The handy man I'm considering to hire states that he is licensed BUT in small print under that you have written that licensing is "self reported' and we should always check to make sure. Who do I call to find out if he is licensed.

There are different places to check depending on the type of license. Generally speaking (in Indiana) most contractors are listed on the city's (or county's) website. In Indianapolis:

Other types of contractors are licensed by the state and can be found on the state's website:

The types of contractors that are not listed on either of these sites are listed by the commission that licenses them so you will have to hunt.

Other counties and states have different methods where you can find this information but you will have to hunt.

Hey there,

If you're unsure if a permit or license is required for the type of work you're looking to hire out for, you can always check with your local city or county building department or city code office. If there's a license or permit, they can tell you about what license is necessary and how to verify it. Good luck with your project!
