How can I eliminate a musty smell in my basement?

I am running a dehumidifier, but I still smell a musty smell in my basement that is sometimes present also on the first floor. No visible sign if any mold

If you have a concrete foundation wall & floor, you may want to consider using a masonry waterproof/sealer paint to minimize any dampness from the walls/floor. Also consider air sealing/insulating the basement perimeter sill plate & band joist. Outside air infilration will affect the moisture.

Don't forget to check not only basement,but any utility closet, crawl space, and decks - water penetrating at deck interfaces with the house, or deck beams penetrting into the house (common on cantilevered front porches) can also cause this.
