After going through same questions and processes for decades now, can share with you best info after many failures.

Psychiatrist will/can only give drugs; that is their niche now. They too often get it wrong, very wrong. Much better is newer lab test, urine test, which gives levels of neurotransmitters, brain chemicals. The neurotransmitters are what psychiatrists target but with powerful drugs and leaves too much to chance. Pharmasan Labs and/or NeuroScience Inc. send a box that has all you need and instructions and questionnaire. Fill out and follow directions. Insurance will cover as a lab if doctor puts diagnosis and signs form. "Neurotransmitter Expanded" and there are others with adrenal gland testing as well. Dozen neurtransmitter levels are given and suggestions for supplements (not heavy drugs) are made. Can also be used to guide the psychiatrist or your regular physician as well. Excellent! Literally saved mine who was mismedicated for years by multiple specialists despite large medical city and recommendations. Would never ever give meds without these test results first for guidance.

Other considerations and helps:

Food allergies, airborne allergies and/or gliadin/gluten (Celiac) can create huge disruptions. Genova Labs does huge test for IgG and IgE (both delayed and life threatening allergens identified). They use blood samples and expose to foods, pollens. If and how much white blood cells react to them dictates allergy. This very helpful and can make a huge difference.

Food dyes (FD&C 3, for example) and other chemicals in foods can cause dramatic changes that last for days (up to 4). Removing them, at least dyes, worth try.

Ascertain getting proper sleep. (i.e. waking on own at proper time bright eyed and bushy tailed)

In any event, regular feeding (2-3 times a week) of live yogurt, purchased plain but can add fruit at home, make smoothie, etc. can be essential. Antibiotics and many foods, even raw produce depending on variety and how grown, kill off gut bacteria that affect our neurotransmitters, brain chemistry. Flavored yogurts usually have a soda's worth of sugar or more in one serving so avoid; add fruit, honey, real maple syrup at home. Be sure it has LIVE cultures and don't freeze or heat yogurt which would kill the essential elements.

Best wishes.
