It really depends on the existing paint type and color as well as the new paint choice. If you are going with a similar color two coats will be sufficient and $350 including paint & supplies is not unreasonable for an experienced painter in my area. A handyman might charge less but the quality of the work may not be as good. Changing from dark to light will require a primer coat before the two coats of paint and will add cost. If the ceiling is vaulted expect to pay more also. An occupied room with furniture the painter will have to move and/or work around may add cost as well. Look on Angie's List for painters in your area and call a few to your home for estimates. That will give you the best idea of what to expect for your conditions.

$225-$325 for labor, plus $90 - $120 for paint. Add more for trim.
