Depends on make/model - best if you find the owner's manual (usually taped/hanging near furnace by installer - or find online at manufacturer's website).

Commonly you have to push the button down (goes in about 1/4-1/2 inch) to be able to turn past the PILOT position. Some are a bit finicky so you have to maintain a light turning pressure on it as you jiggle the knob up and down till it finds the notch it needs to clear to turn.

Other models have a button (I have seen red and black and gray on these) next to the knob which blocks it from turning past pilot till the button is pushed down so a ridge or protrusion on the gas control knob can clear it to turn. At least one make uses a similar spring-loaded metal tab / latch lever next to the knob which blocks it and has to be manually moved aside to turn the knob.

Otherwise, ask a house-handy friend to help, or call a Plumber or Heating and A/C contractor for probably about $75-150 service call charge. or if an older furnace, maybe a neighbor has same make in their house and can tell you how. If you have to go with a tech, I would have them do your annual servicing call at the same time (should cost no more than a servicing call for them to turn it on also), AND while there show you how to turn it back on.
