How do you know when cedar shingle siding needs to be replaced? One painter would paint it, another suggested replacing 1/2 the house.

Is it rotten or severly cracked? If so it needs replacing. If you can visibly see significant damage or can poke a knife point into it easily (not stab it) by hand the wood has gotten too soft and is done.
