If it is out of warranty (most manufacturers require yearly maintenance to maintain warranty) you need to ensure that the filter is clean and the electric parts are in good order. The filter can usually be done the homeowner but electric parts should be checked every couple years from my experience. The contactor is the usual failure that could be the cause of something more expensive like a compressor. some poeple do not maintain the unit and the contactor becomes worn out and then the compressor fails just to save under $100. Compressor would be in the thousands.

Some would say twice a year, but we recommend once ,other than homes with lots of pet (pet hair).

Most filters do not kept the indoor coil clean, cleaning it will reduce efficiency, so the cost pays for itself.

All electrical should be checked, and a good cleanup, including the drain line.

Best to have it doen spring or fall, when quality contractors run specials (slow season).

As always find the best on Angie's list!!
