Always their reputation and reviews - because without a good contractor it does not matter how good your materials are.

Besure to determine up front what type of underlayment you want - tarpaper, roof wrap, or advanced synthetic moisture barrier - and how much you want covered by ice and water shield. Then decide what brands and and color and reflectivity and warranty period (life) of shingles you want, whether you are putting in drip edge and if only along eaves or gable ends too, any trim or fascia covering work needed, type of valley shingling (open or covered in shingles, etc. Of course, in talking with them you can get ideas from them on these - I recommend talking to about 3 responsive contractors on site and get ideas and have them do measurements but NOT prepare a bid just then - after talking to all of them, then tie down the specifics of the scope of work, then have them all bid on the same scope.
