The answer depends on a number of factors - location, condition of the vehicle, quality of the work, color and other similar variables. An 11 year old car almost certainly has small dents and other flaws that will need to be fixed prior to painting. Painting over them tends to make them stand out more. A lot of "discount" painters also cut corners - use a cheaper grade of paint and/or clear coat, don't remove door handles, belt moldings, lights or other parts (a good paint job should extend to behind these parts). At my shop here in northern Virginia the average cost for a professional paint job on a mid sized sedan would be $3000-4000.
