How much should it cost to create an opening and install a header for a door to the backyard?

I am looking into adding a french door or slider to my backyard to existing wall that does not have any door on it yet. The door will be 18' x 8'. How much should it cost to knock out the hole for the door and add a header if required? Also would it make a difference in price if the door was being installed on a second level out to a balcony?

Whoa, back up Charlie - what is going through this sliding door, your pet rhino and elephant side by side ? 18' by 8 ' - you HAVE to be kidding ! I would guess probably about $5-10,000 for the framing, VERY rough ballpark.

Now - assuming you mean a more normal 6-8 foot wide by 7' high door, then can typically be in the $500-1500 range to create the rough opening depending on roof loading and whether wall directly under can carry the load without modifications - can run to $2000+ if you have to beef up the downstairs also to carry the load, then patch up and repaint drywall etc. Probably $750 plus or minus a couple hundred would be the normal range for a standard size sliding glass or french door.

Bear in mind that if you don't want them to leak, you should be considering an awning or porch roof over the door if there is not already a 3 foot roof overhang, or even with the overhang if on the normal wind-blownn side of the house.
