How much should it cost to repair or service, Washer and Dryer (Whirlpool) are 12 years old

We had the Whirlpool Washer and Dryer for the last 12 years. The Dryer is not drying clothes as efficiently as it used to and takes much longer. Also, I read that the Washer hoses should be replaced every 7 - 8 years so they don't flood the house. Is this correct ? And should these be serviced every year ?

Generally, no annual servicing is required. Lubrication of the slide rods and shift rods and associated parts should be done every 5 years or so. Rubber hoses should be replaced every 7 years or so, or about 12-15 years for wire-reinforced ones, or whenever they show wear or cracking, whichever comes first.

On the dryer - if you unplug it and tilt it up and clean underneath with a vacuum every few years, and clean the air channels in the back every year or so when you clean your dryer vent hoses and duct, generally is a run till it makes a funny noise or fails item, though having the motor cleaned and the roller wheels lubed when the washer is lubricated would be a good idea, and he can check the seals at that time..

If you have a warranty (original or additional) check the required service in that - if any is required, it is usually free during the warranty period.

Dryer exhaust duct should be cleaned every 1-3 years depending on how straight the run is - if quite straight and no place it goes uphill then you might go 3 years or more without buildup, if it goes vertical or has seeral bends might need cleaning more frequently - you will have to learn by trial and error or by checking with a flashlight (if straight).

On your dryer problem - four likely causes - the gas jet needs cleaning and adjustment (should be checked every 1-2 years), you have a two-coil electric heating element and one of the two is burned out cutting heat by half, your vent duct is clogging up causing a backup of the airflow, or your drum seals are worn out so you are losing a lot of the hot air that should be drying clothes.

I would get it looked at, get the duct cleaned if not done recently, and while the Appliance Serviceman is there, have him lube the washer.

Service on the two about $100-125 typically, plus about $20 for new hoses if they are old, or about $35 for the type that shut off the water if the hose breaks.
