If you mean a domestic hot water heater - to feed your hot water pipes for showers and basins and such, that is one of the most popular questions - currently 98 responses to that question here -

If you mean a steam or hydronic hot water boiler for radiator/hot water baseboard heating system, then go to the Home > HVAC link in Browse Projects at lower left for many prior questions with responses and a lot of typical cost info for steam or hydronic heating system boilers - fewer responses relating to combined storage tank systems where the boiler heats hot water that is stored in a large tank (which replaces the domestic hot water heater) at heating system temperature, then tempered with colder water down to the 120 degrees or such for domestic use - though some work the other way and store at domestic temperature, then reheat on demand for the home heating demand.

Naturally, cost depends on heating capacity (Btu capacity), steam is a bit more than hot water boiler, and local labor and overall costs affect the cost to some extent, and the efficiency rating of the unit can have quite significant effect - so while the "builders" or economy 80% efficient replacement unit (not requiring a lot of replumbing to put it in) can commonly run in the $3-5,000 range, with high efficiencies and combined storeage tank and exotic control units and such it can get closer to $10,000 than $5,000.
