How do you deal with a bad contractor who says he's gonna finish but doesn't ?

I have paid contractor to put up awning but will not complete job.

Oops - paid him everything up front ? - bit of a mistake there.

If you paid by check and quite recently, see if you can stop payment - or if paid by credit card if paid within dispute period (within 30 or 60 days of date it appears on your statement as I recall) file a claim in WRITING with the credit card company using the procedure on your statement to have them reverse payment and start a claim.

You can also, though more trouble, file a claim with his Bonding company to have them get the job finished for the original contract price.

And of course, after all is said and done, sounds like time for an appropriate Review on Angies List.
