This is a nationwide forum, so unlikely to get any local offears on here.

You could check Craigslist or other local for-sale or for-free sites.

Could also check if your local solid waste services of municiplaity/county runs a free woodlot - some areas allow people to come drop off wood, which other people can then come and cut up and take away for free.

Otherwise, you could (especially if she is on a government aid program qualifying as low-income or such) contact you local United Way and ask if they know of any non-profits in your area that provide heating assistance in those cases. While unlikely there is a free firewood program, might be eligible for a utility or fuel assistance subsidy which might help pay for wood (or gas or electric).
