Like most things, there won't be a simple one size fits all answer to this question, but I'll do my best.

Hardboard siding in theory, should not have to be repainted nearly as often as say cedar siding. But a lot depends on where you are located and the climate that your house is in. In the Chicago area, we feel confident telling people that a regular exterior paint job should last 5-7 years. Hard board should last a bit longer than that and the expected life is probably more like 7-9 years.

Other things that can affect this time frame are the caulking, any pre-existing moisture issues, or really severe weather.

Like any paint job, the final outcome and longevity will be most affected by the amount and quality of preparation.

Hope this helps!
