Ballpark cost - about $75-150/hour unless dealing with a top-end high-priced territory designer like downtown Manhatten, Chevy Chase or Beverly Hills, in which case usually more like $250-400/hour.

Generally, a initial walk-through and concept discussion will be 2-3 hours. Then, from there, can run from additional $500-1000 range for a basic concept layout to $50,000 or more for a complete interior redesign including flooring to ceiling color and finish selection, furnishing selection, drapes, etc. for a high-end house. On a higher end job the designer also commonly acts as the pruchasing agent, actually buying the finishes and dealing with the contractors to do the interior finishes installation.

Your cost really comes down to how much you want - general mid-range home service will probably run about $800-2000 for only an interior finishes consultation, without any furnishings input. If including bathroom and kitchen remodel then typically on the order of twice that.

The interior designer can be independent, or if you are doing a general remodel or major addition then using one who works in conjucntion with your architect usually makes more sense, as then the aesthetic and architectural plans are integrated smoothly.
