How long do CFL bulbs really last?

Just got an email from Angie's list with lighting tips, and it says CFLs 'will last 10-20 years longer than traditional bulbs.' I am not aware of any manufacturer that goes that far - I bought one recently that said it would last 9 years - and certainly 10 to 20 years has got to be the HIGH side of anyone's estimates - not an average, which would be more useful. And, like many consumers, I have found the failure rate to be much higher than this - I have had bulbs fail after only a few months. Could be the manufacturer - I had a # of failed bulbs from FEIT, and they apparently have a bad reputation. They did replace one that had failed at no cost. But who is going to save the paperwork for, in my example, 9 years so they can get a replacement if it fails early? Finally - the replacement bulb I got from FEIT has this printed in easy to read letters on the packaging - "Lasts up to 7 years - guaranteed. First of all, what does 'p to 7 years' mean in a guarantee? Sounds like 'we guarantee it will not last MORE THAN 7 years.' And, in small print, the package says it has a warranty for 2 years! I still use CFLs, because I like the energy savings - but I am not sure they are saving $s, and what about the energy used in manufacturing, if they don't last as long as we expect?

Oops! Our mistake - thanks for helping us catch it! The message is meant to read that CFLs last 10 -15 times longer than traditional bulbs. We have corrected the information on our site and are sorry for any misinformation.
