How long should an air handler last in Palm Beach County, Florida?

Just bought a house. Previous owner had new air handler installed 6 years ago. Was told handler is badly rusted and will need replacement soon. Is this reasonable?

Plain unpainted sheet metal air handler - 6-10 years in a salt air environment like that sounds normal to me. Pre-painting the housing (NOT the evaporator or fan or motor) with clean metal rustoleum paint before installation can roughly double that life.
