How long does a putty repair on a metal drain line last?

The sink drain is the main one for the house that the kitchen sink drains into. I was repairing some sheetrock when I found the line that goes through the wall had a big putty repair aound the metal drain line. Don't know how long that has been there and there haven't been any water leaks.

There aren't any plumbing putties on the market approved by any code for joints that I am aware of. Chances are you have old cast iron hub piping in your house by the sould of it. If it's not leaking just keep an eye on it. How long it lasts depends on what type of putty was used and if it is subjected to expansion and contraction due to temperature changes (especially outside). If you want to be proactive have a plumber replace the joint properly before a leak develops.
