Several possible ways - you probably have to find the parts breakout diagram for your dishwasher in owner's manual or online at manufacturer's website or a place like SearsAtHome to see how yours comes apart - obviously unplug power cord before messing with this.

A number of possible solutions:

0) google to see if this is a known issue with brand - if so, call them and harrangue them enough to have them come out and fix it

1) with broken-off handle removed - or knob/handle pulled off the operating lever if lever is intact, see if you can grab the remaining mechanism with needlenose channel-lock pliers set real tight or use a flat screwdriver in the gap to move the lever or latch bar by hand to open the door

2) see if hinge bolts to door are exposed - usually hidden behind a pop-off lower toekick panel or the front color panel, but sometimes exposed from side to allow you to remove from bottom hinge - then you might be able to wiggle door around enough to unlatch the top - be careful not to pry OUT on the bottom and warp the latch or top of door

3) many have a removeable cover panel over the controls at the upper part of the door - sometimes with screws on the sides you might be able to reach, sometimes compress and pop-out press fit - thereby uncovering the mechanism inside

4) being careful not to "hang" the weight of the dishwasher from the countertop, you might be able to turn the front feet up enough to let the dishwasher lower down a bit at the front to expose the brackets enough to get a hacksaw blade (wrap with tape for handle) or a swazall blade in there to cut through the brackets - guard the countertop and dishwasher with sheet metal pieces (taped on flattened tin cans if nothing else) so blade does not mar them, and go slow and easy - because a broken blade jamming into the front of countertop or dishwasher cannot end well

5) call an appliance repairman

6) remove front color panel to save it (if possible), then sawzall or chisel through top of door to get at mechanism to release it, then buy new door.

7) call Wylie Coyote to come with a case of Acme explosives to take care of it
