How much is a reasonable cost for a wedding photographer?

I have been searching for a photographer for my wedding, and the prices seem to vary dramatically. What is a reasonable cost for photos, a book, a CD, and thank-you cards?

As someone who is recently married, I can attest to the widely varying costs of photographers. The cost seems to have a lot to do with the experience of the photographer an how much they're providing for you. We ended up deciding on a friend of ours who had recently started a photography business on the side, and as a start-up, she was much less expensive than other photographers we had looked at.

We ended up paying under $1,000 dollars and received a CD of over 800 photos from the wedding that were all fantastic. She brought an associate with her, so we had two people taking photos and things went extremely smoothly. We payed much less than we would have AND we got to help out a friend and her new business.

In the end, it's your wedding, so you should get the photos you want. If that means you want a professional who's been doing weddings for many years, be prepared to pay upwards of $3-4,000 or more. Just know that there's many people out there who are just getting started who are also very good and can cost you a lot less.
