How do we get rid of ants in our water oak trees?

We have two water oak trees in our back yard. They are probably at least 25 to 30 feet high. We had them trimmed and a lot of the dead wood and some of the good wood had ants, lots of ants. Do we need an arborist or a pest control company or can we get rid of the ants ourselves?

I would certainly call an arborist to take a look first. Sign in at to find a highly-rated tree service in your area.

Sounds like your tree is rotted inside. It will have to come down. Have a tree company send and ARBOIST out. They might be able to say how bad it is, and for how long it can stay - but it is growing and rotting at the same time.

A non professinal suggests you use the little ant bait traps. They have an insecticide that will kill and entire colony when the little worker ants carry it back to home. I used triple expanding foam in tree cavity and put extremely fine stainless steel screen over the hole with it overlapped and held down on the overlap with downspout screws, Around the parimeter i used silicone clear caulk to seal the screen to the tree, I ended up painting the screen brown so it is less visable,, I live in nice area and silver maple tree is growing over the screen,, Why the screen? To keep the pesky tree sucking ants out, Even tho I have poisoned them seveal times,

I agree with calling an arborist to determine the health of the tree. However even if they adress the tree's health a pest control company will be necessary to rid you of the ants. Contact Angies list for a list of good companies.
