Question DetailsAsked on 9/2/2015

I am looking for best 2 ton air conditioning unit - Ruud, Trane, or Carrier? I need one now!!

I need the compressor, condenser - the unit on the roof and the unit in the hall closet - They say I need a 2 ton unit and the prices for the Ruud and Trane are comparable - the Carrier is quite a bit less. Is the brand dependable?

Carrier is as dependable as any, more then most.

Being a lower price, sounds like the particular model of Carrier may not be comparable to the models of the other brands. All have numerous choices.

If replacing the compressor and condensor you are replacing most of the unit, and you are talking possibly changing brands, so you are into basically a new A/C system. Especially if you have a Freon (R-22) system, if you need to replace those two components together it is almost certainly old, so getting a totally new R-410A unit with better operating efficiency might be your best bet.

That probably means a change from Freon to R-410a under the new environmental laws - which also means you also have to simultaneously replace the evaporator (the cold "radiator" which the air flows over to be cooled) to match, under current law, because the energy rating is based on the overall combined system. And highly likely the refrigerant tubing as well.

Hence, you should almost certainly be looking at an installed complete system cost, not just compressor and condensor.

Or - rereading what you said - you may be talking compressor and condensor (roof unit) and air handler with evaporator (hall closet unit) - that would be more usual for a residence than a remote condensor, and also much more energy efficient because that gets the hot compressor outdoors so it is not heating your house up. In that case, if replacing evaporator and roof unit both, you are absolutely talking a brand new R-410a unit.

BTW - do NOT fall for a system that runs on anything other than R-410a - because the Freon replacement gases that a few foreign made units run on are being slated for banning by the EPA the same as R-22 Freon, so go with the most common gas that is specifically provided for by law - R-410a.

Like BayAreaAC, I trust Carrier more than the rest, though the other two are not "bad" brands. Also like him, I would be surprised to see a more than about 10% difference in price between the brands for comparable rated units, so I would reconfirm the bids are truly comparable - same efficiency, complete systems including removal of old equipment, etc, because something does not ring quite true there. Unless the prices you have are all from one vendor who happens to be an authorized Carrier distributor so they are pushing that brand.

You should get at least 3 responsive bids on comparable systems to get a good handle on what the "fair" price is for your replacement system.
