I have a Whirlpool washer type 111. It recently stopped working and makes a loud humming noise

It won't drain water or spin. I was told it was the motor. Do you think it is worth investing in for repair? Or should I purchase an entirely different washer

Assuming this was not under warranty - in which case you could say that part should nw be good and wait to see if anything else fails. Since it just sits and hums, rather than beating the machine to death, I would not expect other components to have been hurt by its failure - though there is the possibility that once he tears into there he will find the gearbox has locked up, which can add another several hundred or so to the repair cost.

Did you get a repair estimate ? Motor replacement probably $150-400 depending on model, at least an hour repair job so probably $250-700 repair cost, for what (depending on model) is likely a $400-450 washer. Sounds like replace time to me, getting a new manufacturer's warranty in the process. And with modern appliances and their higher failure rates, I recommend buying the 3 year extended manufacturer warranty for about $100 or so too - almost certain to pay off in that time period, as major appliances currently are reported to have a 25% first-year failure rate, and around 70% at 3 years.

General rule of thumb - if you pay not more than 25% of item purchase cost for a MANUFACTURER (not third-party) parts and labor warranty for 3-5 years, you will likely to come out ahead and are protected against major or repetitive repairs. For example - our vehicle extended warranty (beyond normal 7/70 coverage) cost about 1/3 the accumulated repairs over its 5 year life, GE range warranty for something like $150 paid off about 3 fold on repeated burner control curnouts (because they keep replacing with the same defective part model), about $110 3 year whirlpool washer warranty paid off in less than a year because of a gearbox failure.

But be careful about warranties with a "buy-out" clause or maximum limit on coverage or deductible - there are a lot of slimy warranties designed to pretty much guarantee that it never pays out more than you paid for it - making it worthless. Mostly third party ones, but some manufacturer warranties are pretty slimy too - saw one appliance warranty on a major appliance (Samsung as I recall) that said you had to send the failed device back to the manufacturer at your expense for replacement - imagine the cost of sending a washer to Asia ! A tricky way to avoid people ever claiming their warranty coverage.

Another consideration - the 1 year parts and labor / 3 to 5 years on major components warranties are going away, as are the 2-5 year OEM warranties - more and more are now 3-12 month labor and parts, then no warranty beyond that - so if you don't buy an OEM extended warranty you are not even getting the normal coverage you used to get. I just consider it as part of the cost of the item when I am pricing an item.

Of course, the item you are buying and whether it is electronic or not matters a LOT too - washers probably go out the most, followed by dishwshers and ranges - dryers and reefers and non-electronic ranges tend to go a LONG time so a warranty might not be as likely to pay off. Of course, if electronic controlled rather than plain electric controls the failure rate is a lot higher, and repairs cost a lot more, so you need to consider that. Just buying a cheaper non-electronic washer and dryer can greatly reduce your long-term service costs and bring the item down to an almost disposable cost ($300-500 range) versus having major repairs done.

Whether you are a DIY'er or not matters too - ranges and dryers and most parts on reefers and simple mechanical-timer dishwashers are pretty easy to service yourself - washers and higher-end electronic-controlled dishwashers not so much, so whether uyou get an electronic appliance or not and whether you want an extended warranty with the purchase may be affected by that too.
