Question DetailsAsked on 6/29/2015

I want to add 220V outlet in my garage . How much would it cost if I dont have a space on the panel.

I need a 220V outlet in the garage to charge my electric car. The electrician says that I don't have space ob the panel so he has to upgrade the panel and asking $ 3500 to do it.

$3500 sounds REALLY out of line unless your incoming supply cannot handle the added load AND your breaker box is unable to handle the added load too. Rather than upgrade the panel for this, I would just put another tap on the meter main breaker or disocnnect, with a separate small breaker box just for the car connection, for probably 1/4 that cost or maybe less. I would gert another contractor to look at it, or askk that one for a rebid with a separate dedicated breaker panel just for the car circuit - or maybe with a couple of extra slots for possible future needs too.
