Question DetailsAsked on 7/5/2012

I want to do baking from my home for people in my town of Durant, Okla. What safety laws and regulations do I need to be aware of?

I love to bake homemade pies, cakes, and cookies and have been told my baked goods are delicious. I would like to know what I would need to do to get started in the way of advertising and also any laws and regulations I may not know about. I am retired but I would like to do some baking from my home. Not anything big but just to supplement my income. I love to bake and thought this would be a great way to keep active and help financially too. Any help is greatly appreciated. Jacqueline

Check with your local health department. These days there are stringent food safety requirements that must be met. And a person doing cooking must obtain a food handler permit.

You likely need to obtain a business permit also. Your local government (city or county) is where you go to check on that.

You can probably find these government agencies on the internet.

The standards for a home operated catering business are held to higher restrictions than some of the swankiest restaurants in town. Call your Health Department. Make sure you have a business license, and never send left over food home with guests without having them sign a waiver to exclude you from being held responsible once the food leave the premises. How do you know that creme torte won't sit in the trunk for 2 days and then of course everyone gets sick. Always CYOA!!!!!!
