Not knowing how your home is built, but assuming plywood sheathing - following very roguh ballkpark costs would be common ballpark numbers for the materials only - typically on the order of $3-5/SF or so additional for labor to remove down to the framing and reroof from there on up.

Plywood sheathing if it needs replacing - $1-2/SF
Asphalt shingles - around $1-1.25/SF
Architectural asphalt shingles - $1.20-2/SF
Sheet steel - $1.20-2/SF
Metal shingles - $2.50-5/SF
Stone-covered steel sheet or standing seam steel - $3-5/SF
Copper/zinc sheet - $6-10/SF

So - for sheet steel versus asphalt shingles about $1/SF more roughly, for metal shingles about $1.50-4/SF more, raised seam metal $1-4/SF more. Labor cost for various types not dramatically different until you get to zinc, copper, or stone roofing.

Obviously, if you are thinking both, find a few good vendors in the Roofing category of Search the List and ask them to quote you one specific materials you select for both options, to give you both choices to decide from.
