Most cabinet suppliers will do the basic design for free if you come in with accurate measurements in this area. What you need is to measure placement of all walls, from corner to corner and from each corner to the edge of the mouldings on windows, doors, center line of things like the existing sink, stove, exhaust fan and refridgerator. If it is a total gut and plumbing and electrical are getting updated you may not need the utilities shown. If you are not the greatest at drawing if you have a camera and a printer you could take a picture of each wall pint a large copy and write all the dimensions on it.

If it is so small a kitchen that no real design changes are possible you may be able to do it yourself but this is what these people do and they may see things that would help that you may not. Some places will charge for a home visit to measure and credit you the cost when you order. Unless you are talking about the Big Box stores the designers no many of the little tricks to make your kitchen a good working space. I have been doing mostly kitchens and baths now as I have gotten a bit older and even with the years of experience I have my designer will tweak some of my layouts. You could start with a Big Box store but I would not. Their designers have limited experience and I find many errors on their layouts even after they have gone out to check the measurements. Plus unless you are talking about one of the lines made just for them a local cabinet company can beat their price. Kraftmaid is one brand that builds certain cabinets just for them and if you go with it no other companies can compete. If it is one of Kraftmaids regular cabinets I had a recent experience where an interior designer brought her customer in and my guy beat the price even after the designer added $2,500 for herself! He got the sale though I did not get the kitchen install when she added 66% to my price.

Like other comment said, if you know exactly what you want, contractors can measure for what they are ordering - just be sure to have actuall appliances in hand for measurement BEFORE they are there. If you need help laying out the elements, an interior kitchen designer will run about $0-150 typically IF you are ordering appliances and cabinets through them, otherwise more like $250-500 for a kitchen design all the way through flooring and finish materials and color selections.
