Question DetailsAsked on 9/12/2014

I have a large rug over a parquet floor. What is the best cleaning method? Will steam cleaning harm the floor?

It is a very heavy rug under a heavy table, so I cannot send it out. Will I harm the parquet if I use a regular commercial carpet cleaning service for my rugs?

The less water or steam cleaning a wood floor gets, the better for it. Even if did not hurt it, the steam is likely to fog or haze the finish, leaving a different-looking rug-shaped surface under the rug when it comes time to sell it - so I certainly would not do that. I have beeninvolved in jobs where almost brand new (less than 2 months in cases) flooring was being refinished or replaced because an area rug was cleaned on top of laminate or hardwood and it left almost perfect impressions of the carpet surface on the flooring finish, due to steam or water or chemicals or just the residual wet dirt that sank to the bottom of the carpet ridges accumulating and mildewing on the underlying surface.

You say too heavy to move to clean - I have seen 500 pound rugs rolled up around a tube and hauled off to be cleaned by a commercial carpet and runner cleaning company - commonly the same type company who does entry mats for office buildings and stores and such. They would send 2 or more men to move it out and back in, so moving a heavy table as necessary should be no problem.
