Here are some similar and related questions with answers which should help:

My recommendation - make sure the grab bars are BOLTED into the studs (not into drywall or just the surround), and minimum 2 bolts per bracket. And definitely NOT suction type - they can release without warning or when water enters them during showering or bathing.

And make sure contractor, when you talk to him, can CLEARLY explain how he is going to locate those studs - because it does your tile or surround no good to have explorat=ory or msised holes put through it hunting for the studs.
