I was told I didn't need a permit but I found out I was wrong, how can I correct this

An awning was built and was told I didn't need a permit, I would like to know how I can correct this mistake

If a building department person told you wrong, talk to a supervisor about it - that are usually (except in many large city areas like NYC where they see permit fees as a primary income source) understanding as long as you were not just trying to skip on the permit on purpose.

If the contractor you used told you that a permit was not needed, I would require that HE get the permit and inspection and provide you with the completed signed-off permit and inspection document(s) - which he should do at no cost. Depending on permit cost (might beeasier to do yourself if nominal) you could probably also go after his bonding company to pay for it if he refuses, if a large amount - which unless this is a sidewalk-infringing permit needing both building permit and planning and zoning approval, it likely is not.

Here are a few previous similar questions about work done with permits and more detail on getting it corrected, and how much of a hassle it can be in some areas (almost exclusively large cities or "rich" suburbs).
