Question DetailsAsked on 8/13/2015

I have an eight year old, 3.5 Ton Comfortmaker AC. We need advice on repair or replace.

We were told by a reputable company that the evaporator coil is leaking freon. When tech added the freon, he noticed suction pressure rapidly beginning to fall. Found blower to have shut off during recharge. the company says we can repair (but it damaged other things) the coil, insulate cabinet and control board ($2300), but we may end up having another costly repair such as the compressor because of the freon and oil exchange. Additionally we found out that the installing company put in our handler horizontally instead of vertically as was necessary. They are recommending we don't rack up expensive repair bills and replace the system now. Thoughts?

First get a second opinion on the repair cost and two more quotes on replacement costs. Comfortmakers aren't exactly top of the line, they're (cheap) builder grade. I had one, when it leaked I replaced it - wasn't going to deal with that. I would vote for replacing, but first get more estimates.
