If I need to add more soffit vents, are roofers qualified to do this or should I seek our carpenters?

It's not like you are framing a house. Any competant trades person should be able to install soffit ventilation. This is not to put my seal of approval on all roofers as "competant" because I have met many that I would not trust with a saw. However a professional roofing contractor should have absolutely no problem installing soffit vents, we do it all the time. And if you are considering hiring someone unprofessional, STOP.
