Question DetailsAsked on 4/4/2015

If you had a bad tub/tile refinishing job done and now it's chipping, to fix can you re-do or must tub be replaced?

Bad workmanship on a bathtub refinishing job, started to chip almost immediately, continues to chip. Tub refinishing company would do nothing to help. It's going to get worse. Will I have to replace tub or can it be refinished again?

Since the tub needed refinishing in the first place, questionable if you would make a lot of headway claiming they ruined it so should pay for a new replacement tub - but certainly they should refund the amount you paid them at a minimum - or put in a claim on their Bond for that or total stripping of the finish and resurfacing, at a minimum.

I am no fan of refinishing in the first place (other than total removal and shop blasting and refinishing from scratch like for antique clawfoot tubs and such), so I personally would not expect a new refinishing job to be much better - and of course because their job is chipping off, clearly IT has to be totally removed for any new refinish to have any hope of surviving.

So my call - write it off - but of course where you get with their bonding company could affect that too. You might also have a potential claim with their insurance company, on the basis that your tub needed refinishing BUT because they agreed to refinish it that was a statement that it was in suitable condition for refinishing rather than needing tearing out, SO because they botched the refinish job it now should be removed because it is not practical to remove their botched finish job and refinish it properly. Might get some traction with that argument in a small claims court or with the insurance company, probably not in a full trial (which this is not worth going to).

Of course, for a replacement versus refinish you are talking several times as much money over what you already paid - and I would NOT accept a reline job in lieu - far too many of them end up with problemswith water between the liner and the tub, or cracking of the liner because it does not fit perfectly so has unsupported areas.

Another case I think of penny wise, pound foolish - tub/shower refinishing/relining/insert jobs are just an invitation to an unhappy ending, to my mind.

No you do not need to replace your bathtub. Bathtubs can be refinished over and over again. And when refinishing is done by a professional and care instructions are followed by the homeowner, they can last 10-20 years. Our refinished tubs typically do!

You obviously got ripped off by someone or some company claiming to be a professional refinisher. This tub should not be chipping. It should like bright and shiny like a brand new tub! You should not be able to tell the difference between a professionally refinished tub and a brand new tub that has never been refinished.

Please let me know if you have any other questions. We have been in the bathtub refinishing business for 35+ years, and all of our thousands of customers have been happy ones!
