Is there alternative land line telephone service available in Spring Valley WI?

Spring Valley Telephone co. is an independent and forces us to take land line and upgraded cable packages to get high speed internet. Can we get alternative services over their lines?

From a landline company, you are likely talking a DSL connection (Digital Subscriber line, though some call it a Dedicated Subscriber Line) which requires a landline to carry the signal. As for them requiring the upgraded cable package with it - I would call your state regulatory commission about whether that is legal - generally, requiring bundling of unrelated services is illegal. However, your service might be like our cooperative phone company - a bundled package costs less then independent computer service charges, so inthat case the bundling, though not required, makes sense. For instance, we get bundled landline, 2 cell phones plus 10 GB/sec DSL cheaper than any two of the three.

I don't know how many companies have it, but AT&T still has internet over phone line service - but without a DSL line from your phone company it is going to be limited to about 33KB/sec - as opposed to 1 to 40 GB/sec options with DSL, so unless you want to go back to dialup speeds that is a no-go.

Your local cable TV company (dish or cable) probably bundles internet service with cable service - ditto with satellite cable companies - but again you would be paying for cable service + internet, though it would allow you to drop the landline phone in favor of cell phone only, if you want - unless you need the landline for other uses like security system.

Many cell phone providers also provide internet service, but unlimited data is becoming rare - most companies limit you to a couple GB per month without extra high usage charges, whereas a normal computer-based internet user uses about 18GB per month - but a lot of customers run 50-100GB/month or more if highly connected and particularly if streaming video movies at a GB or two each.
