Is it customary to tip workmen, such as plumbers, electricians, remodelers, etc.? I've never heard of tipping contactors.

No, but if they do an exception job and exellent cleanup, there is no rule agaisnt it either.

For a contractor, especially self-employed ones like many small tradesmen, the best thing you cann do is give them good reviews on places like Angie's List, and send them a letter of recommendation of their services with authorization in the letter for future potential clients to call you as a reference for their work.

For an employee, a letter commending the work of the crew or worker, sent ot the boss, carries a lot more value than a one-time tip, as that may lead to promotion or a permanent wage increase that even at $0.25/hour would add up to $500/year increase - FAR more than you would ever consider tipping.
