Is hardwood floor re finishing dangerous for a family?

My wife feels we need to move out when refinish our 1st floor...we will have access to kitchen and the basement....any guidance?

You'll basically have to move out anyway because the rooms will have to be cleared to do the job right. Also, try as they might to contain it there will be increased dust. If you can move out it would be advisable just based on the hassle while the work is being done. If not, there will be times you'll want to be out due to smells and noise. The stair well should be sealed off well enough to keep most of the dust out of the other levels as long as you have an exterior door to get out of rather than breaking that seal. The fumes will be something else. Rent a hotel for a couple of days while the stain and poly are being applied. A good refinisher should be able to do all of the work once it's emptied of contents in about a week.
