While it is technically possible to disinfect a moldy carpet and treat it to kill the spores, generally speaking that means taking it out of the house (except sometimes when on concrete slab) but generally unelss just a pretty small area that got moldy, the carpet and padding is usually tossed - both because it is pretty hard to guarantee the carpet has had the odor removed and the spores killed even it it is cleaned right and the pad is tossed, but also because the treatment is generally going to ruin the carpet and make it all baggy and lumpy and possibly cause the weave to come unglued from the warp and backing.
